Guiding Principle

The corporate world can be a place of tremendous growth, opportunity and change. Workers are being demanded to perform better than ever with a reduced workforce, an increased workload and greater time pressure. All employees from all levels of management are being faced with enormous levels of stress. We know that the human body is resilient and can take a considerate amount of abuse and neglect. But chronic stress will eventually wear down the body, the worker's energy, drive, and general quality of life drops. This leads to drops in productivity, team spirit and increases in absenteeism.

Today the level of professional burnout is astounding. Physicians report that up to 80% of all patient visits are due to stress-related factors. Insurance companies are signalling that most medical claims are related to mental health problems rather than physical reasons.

Additional sources of stress affecting the workplace include personality clashes, interpersonal conflict, and managing a busy family life. As a result, finding the balance between family, work, and leisure can be a challenge.

In this day and age where work and family pressures are so taxing on the person's mind, body, and spirit, it is absolutely vital that the employee be given some coping tools. Here, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

Approach

In a setting of non-judgement, safety and anonymity, the therapeutic process begins. To begin with there is an initial assessment that allows the psychologist to better understand the root of your difficulties and set out a customized intervention plan.

The intervention is based on the model of systemic corporate management and uses cognitive-behavioral tools. The approach is psycho-educational and solutions-oriented. To enhance the effectiveness of the intervention, the employees are encouraged to participate in the group sessions and practice using the recommended modalities between sessions.

Process

With the help of the psychologist, the needs of the company or department are identified and a customized treatment plan is designed. Questionnaires can often be used to aid in the detection of potential problematic areas.

In acute, specific circumstances, intervention can involve counselling, conflict resolution, crisis intervention and problem solving with a few key people that need support.

In preventative or ongoing problematic issues that involve several people or departments, training seminars or workshops can be valuable and effective forums for teaching coping skills to groups. These group sessions can involve the use of questionnaires.

Follow-up sessions are then set up to support the employees that have been through the training.

Goal

The aim of this intervention is to identify problematic situations and provide the organization with proven and effective solutions. Also, it is expected that staff training and development will facilitate stress coping resources, improved quality of life, create harmonious work groups, and improved work performance.
