Dr. Sophie Côté, Ph.D.

Psychologist

Mission

My goal is to help you fully understand what factors are contributing to your current issues. Empowering you through the knowledge and acceptation of yourself, the therapeutic process helps you progress towards a better inner peace by making gradual changes in your lifestyle, your perceptions and your emotions.

Educational Background / Professional Training

  • Doctorate degree in Psychology (research and clinical) – University of Ottawa
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology – Laval University
  • Psychological/psychometric evaluation
  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Health psychology, onco-psychology
  • Couples therapy
  • Short-term therapy
  • Problem-solving therapy
  • Spiritual and transpersonal psychology
  • Meditation, visualisation and relaxation techniques
  • Virtual reality therapy (cybertherapy)

Approach

Dr. Sophie Côté uses a unique blend of empirically validated approaches such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (how emotions and behaviour are influenced by the mind), experiential therapy (how our experiences can shape and reshape us, and how we can transcend ourselves through our experiences), existential therapy (understanding and resolving the life crises we inevitably face) and mythological therapy (the use of tales, myths, legends and archetypes to gain a better understanding of ourselves and offer guidance in our daily lives).

Procedure

Instead of addressing only the symptoms of a given issue (for example, anxiety), Dr. Côté helps you unravel and examine the elements that create and perpetuate it (for example, being taught as a child that the world is a dangerous place). When you book your first appointment, you will receive an evaluation questionnaire (usually by email). This procedure allows Dr. Côté to quickly target the issues that are problematic for you and it accelerates the evaluation process during your first consultation. Once the evaluation is completed, Dr. Côté sets therapeutic goals with you based on your most important therapeutic needs, which makes sure you are both in tune with the therapeutic work being done. Sessions can involve exercises, teaching new tools, guided introspection, at a pace that makes you comfortable. As most of the transformation usually takes place in your daily life, sessions typically end with Dr. Côté suggesting a homework, exercise, introspection theme, that you can work with until your next consultation.

Personal

Sophie lives in the West Island with her husband and son. Spiritual practice, contact with nature and its cycles, yoga and meditation are very important elements of her daily life. Her creativity expresses itself through music, dancing, writing, arts and crafts, photography and finding innovative ways to facilitate personal growth in herself and others.
